 Introduction to CARG

Saskatoon’s Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group Inc. (CARG) is an organization that promotes education, fellowship and exercise for heart patients in Saskatoon and the surrounding area. Working in partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and the City of Saskatoon, CARG provides cardiac patients an opportunity to continue their rehabilitation after they have completed the SHA LiveWell Program

Patients who join CARG are referred by an SHA Therapist from the Field House or Shaw Centre. For those who have coronary artery disease and have not gone through the LiveWell Program, you must contact the Chronic Disease Management Program – Nurse Clinicians at 306-655-2136. This is especially helpful for people who have recently moved into the area.

Since its humble beginning in 1985, CARG has had over 4000 members, including three original members who still attend at the Field House and the Shaw Centre. CARG is funded by membership dues, monthly fees and donations.

Some of CARG’s purposes and functions are:

  • To work with the SHA and its cardiac rehabilitation team to promote a continuation of patient rehabilitation programming and education.
  • To partner with SHA and the City of Saskatoon to provide our members with safe and secure facilities to participate in rehabilitation programming.
  • To encourage not only the patient, but their family members to participate in CARG activities.
  • To visit heart patients on the Cardiac Ward (6000) at Royal University Hospital (RUH) to talk about the benefits of CARG and give them encouragement and answer the many questions they may have.
  • To provide Heart pillows, made by CARG members and volunteers, to heart patients who have undergone heart surgery, upon their release from hospital.
  • To participate in group social activities and the support of Research and Development of treatment for patients with coronary artery disease.
